Orientation – Paris Place

A Gentle pause before continuing with YOUR booking
Welcome to our forest retreat in Birkenhead, Auckland. Before continuing with your booking request, we kindly ask you to take a slow breath, a sip of tea (or wine), and read this short note from our family.
This is a real, much-loved family home — not a showroom, hotel, or magazine-perfect escape. On Friday nights, we drink wine and eat pizza on the couches. Occasionally, gravity wins. Fiona spends her days tending the veggie patch and battling invasive ginger and jasmine in the forest — and every now and then, she forgets to remove her boots when dashing inside for water on a hot summer’s day.
Ryan is a lifelong fixer and builder, which means you may spot the occasional half-finished project… or a tell-tale drip of paint that hasn’t quite been chased down yet. Finn trains hard on the volleyball court or at the beach, and sometimes returns home carrying what feels like half the North Shore’s sand with him. We also share our home with two beautiful cats and the most lovable black Labrador imaginable. With that love comes fur — which we do our best to manage, but which has a talent for reappearing just when you thought you’d won. And because we live beside a forest, you may occasionally meet a curious wētā, spider, or gecko — all of whom are gently escorted back outside to where they belong.
Our family loves living, travelling, and being immersed in nature — and our home reflects that spirit.
We’ve chosen to share our home through Home Exchange and Airbnb with people who feel the same way: those who can smile at the odd wine stain, laugh off a stray cat hair on their shorts, and understand that a house filled with life will never be sterile.
That said, we do hire a professional cleaner before every arrival to take care of what slips past our extremely untrained “family eyes.”
The world is full of wonderfully different people — and that’s what makes it such a beautiful place. But if you’re someone who packs an extra can of insect spray “just in case,” or whose day is undone by a piece of lint drifting across the floor, then our home will not be the right fit. We say this kindly, and without judgment, and encourage you to continue your search elsewhere.
However…
If you love to relax and enjoy life — plunging into the pool, soaking in the hot spa, watching the finale of Stranger Things on the 87-inch TV, cooking up a feast and leaving the dishes for the morning — then onward and upward.
You’ve found your place. 🌿✨

OTHER ENTERTAINMENT

Swimming Pool

We have a 35,000L swimming pool to enjoy. During the summer, we manage the pool and keep it at 24 degrees. The pool heating is turned off in the winter, and the water is cool at 14 degrees. You are welcome to use the pool in the winter (for a cold plunge) if you are brave.

SPA Pool
  • We have a lovely spa in a corner grotto of the garden. The water is kept at 39′ C and is available to use. Please put the spa cover on after use to keep the water heat contained. To use it, please only press the lowest button (closest to the water), and this will generate the bubble and jet streams. It is set to a timer of around 20 minutes, after which the bubbles will automatically turn off. You can press it again if you wish to continue. If you exit before the next 20 minutes are up, please press the same button again to turn off the bubbles. You need only cover up the spa, and it will automatically warm up again for your next soak.
Tennis court

We share a communal outside tennis court/basketball court/Volleyball court with our three neighbours. The court is maintained and cleaned during the summer months, but it does get a layer of moss during the winter.

Tennis rackets, pickleball rackets, and basketballs can be found in the cupboard under the stairs.

Working the TVs!

We have done our best to make using the TV easy, but here are a few directions in case things go ‘South’.

Hit the red button on the top right or the light blue button on the top left of the remote (depending on TV remote style).

You need to stay logged in to the account OurLittleFamily for all the streaming services to work correctly. We have other accounts as we came from South Africa, but this is the one that allows you access to all streaming services save for apple- which has its own rules!

All our TVs work via streaming, so hit the home button (like a house) to navigate back to the app home page – from here, simply select the app (Netflix, Neon) that you want to watch and then navigate within the app.

Meals

Food

Paris Place is self-catering, although we welcome you to freely use coffee, tea, sugar, sauces, oils, etc. that are in our cupboards – beware some of the hot sauces – they are HOT!

We will clear some cupboard space and space in the fridge for you before your arrival. If you need more space, an additional fridge is available in our downstairs garage.

Cooking

We offer four facilities for cooking,

  • Stovetop – this is a gas stove, turn selected control knob and press into ignite – hold for a few clicks if the hob does not ignite immediately.
  • Oven – This is a gas oven; simply select the preferred heating style and turn the temperature to the correct level.
  • Air Fryer – Place food into the air fryer, hit the on button, select the basket (1 or 2), select the cooking style (air fryer, max heat, etc.), then select the minutes (up or down). Once selected, hit the start/stop button, and the air fryer will begin.
  • Microwave – turn the knob clockwise to select a time, then hit the start button. To defrost, tap ‘Turbo defrost’, turn the knob to select food weight, and hit the start button.
BBQ facilities

We have a charcoal/wood BBQ on the front deck that is available to use. Please ensure that someone is monitoring the fire at all times. After use, please clean the grids and return the BBQ cover to protect from weather

Coffee Machine

Our coffee machine is available to use. Here are a few quick instructions

  1. After turning on, place the grind holder under the grinder and depress for 15 – 20 seconds (shown on the counter). Remove and press the coffee grounds.
  2. Lock the grind holder into place by lifting and rotating anticlockwise.
  3. Wait until the machine is warm and both lights are showing, then press either single, double, or manual button to make coffee.
  4. Milk can be frothed using the adjacent milk warming/clothing machine. Simply add milk, press on button.

Alternative

  • A plunger is available if the coffee machine is over technical.
Takeout

Birkenhead offers a wide variety of takeaways, and can readily be ordered and delivered using the Uber Eats app.

RULES

Smoking & Vaping

Our house is smoke and vape-free. Smoking and vaping can be done on the balconies or in the backyard around the swimming pool. Please use bins for your butts and don’t flick them into the garden.

Nature friendly

Our house is proudly nature-friendly. Where possible use organic controls and cleaners that do not kill or harm animals, and we respect all the animals that share our lands with us.

The two exceptions are flies and mosquitos. Feel free to use these to control them at your desire. Just ensure that when spraying that the pets are outside.

Quiet times

Paris Place is positioned in a secluded area, but we do have neighbours with young families. Please keep any music at moderate levels after 10 pm.

Cleaning

We do appreciate if you can leave our home in the same state that you found it. Specifically with regards to cleaning before checking out, we would ask

  1. Dishes are loaded into the dishwasher, and a cycle is put on to run. We are happy to unload it when we return. Doing this avoids an ant problem.
  2. Linen – Please remove the linen from beds that have been used and put it into the washing machine, which you can leave to run. Also, leave any towels that have been used on the bed.
  3. Rubbish – Please remove your rubbish bins and load them into the plastic bins outside downstairs (large is recycling, small is for landfill).

KEYS / ACCESS

Keys

Upon arrival, the keys to the front door will be inside a grey receptacle that resembles a rock, and sits to the left of the front door, nestled into the left side of the aloe planter. All you need to do is pull off the white plastic door underneath the rock, and the key is inside.

At checkout, please lock the front door and then place the keys into the stone and return it to the same place that you found it, so we don’t have to play ‘hide-and-seek’ when we return home.

Check in

Our official check-in time is 1.00 PM. If you arrive early, and we are still at home, you are welcome to store your luggage and then return to check-in at 1.00pm once we have left.

Check-out

Check-out time is 10.30 AM on checkout day. We appreciate it if you respect this to ensure rooms can be cleaned and prepared.

TECH STUFF

Heat Pumps

Heatpumps are controlled by the white remotes located close to them. To turn the heat pump on, simply hit the yellow button in the top centre. Use the mode button to toggle through heat, dry, cool, fan, auto etc. Then use the up/down arrows to select the preferred temperature.

PETS

Depending on our previous discussions, we may leave one or more of our pets with you during your stay. If we have agreed on our pets staying, here are the details of their care.

Nika - Black Lab

Nika is our beloved black Labrador dog. It is very important to us that you note that she is an INSIDE living dog. She may bark when you first enter. She does not bite  – she will settle quickly, especially if you say her name. We try to take her with us when we can, so don’t fret if she’s not there when you arrive. She is full of love, but can be a little shy to begin with around strangers. Don’t worry, a quick tummy rub and chest scratch will turn her into your friend for life.

Note that she is a lounge dog. She sleeps on the couch, and that is why we cover it with blankets. You can remove them when you sit down and replace them at night or when you go out.  Please NEVER EVER leave Nika locked outside. She is an escape artist and might leave as she is not used to this treatment. . Please always keep the side gate- neat the banana tree closed and latched, as that is her easiest escape route. There are other ways she can get out, but that is the easiest and the way she’ll try first if she is locked outside.

We leave the back door open at all times, even when we are all out. She keeps the house protected. It might feel strange locking the front door but keeping the back door open, but that’s how we roll!

Nika is fed out the back (in a funky Purple slow-eat bowl) once a day in the morning – typically around 7 – 8am. Her food is a scoop of dry food, and then some chopped pet meat from the roll in the fridge.

Nika loves a small walk in the afternoon, but if you cannot manage this, no worries!

Nika may limp slightly with her left back leg – this is unfortunately age related, so don’t worry if you see her limp in cold mornings before she warms up.

Nika sometimes needs a bathroom break in the night, so please ensure the back door is left ajar for her. It is completely safe to do this, as she will bark should anything unusual enter the house ( which has never happened).

Clooney - the Ginger

Clooney is a large, warm and cuddly ginger- white neutered Tom cat. He was rescued a few years ago and is a lovely member of our house and our son Finn’s cat.

Clooney is mostly self-reliant and will come and go as he pleases through the back catflap if the back door is ever closed. This is only likely if Nika is not at home when you arrive, as she’s gone with us.

Clooney eats dry food only, and we put out a handful of food a couple of times a day, usually when he slides up to us with a little smile and a meow. Please feed him up on the countertop next to the oven, only as Nika will eat his food if you feed him any lower down.

Mango - the fishmongers alley cat

Mango is her mum’s shadow and is a Mozambique native and possibly one of the world’s most well-travelled cats, following her mum around for the past 13 years.

These days, she mostly enjoys living indoors and seeking out spots of sun that remind her of her time in tropical Mozambique.

It is most likely that Mango will be in kennels, and so you won’t have to worry about her!

TRANSPORT

Parking

Please park on the verge on the opposite side of the driveway to the house. We have placed gravel down to ensure your car will not get stuck or slip.

Buses

The nearest bus stop is a 7-minute walk to Mokoia road. To access the bus, you will need an AT Hop card.
